CAPD patients evaluated ESRD as a challenge. 94Īll patients perceived ESRD in terms of a loss and a threat. PD showed an advantage over HD in terms of perceptions of ESRD chronicity and controllability. Patients’ most common causes of attributions were stress, worry, or poor past medical care. PD patients perceived their illness to be significantly less chronic and more controllable, whether through personal or treatment control. Both the disease itself and negative perceptions of the illness may increase patients’ morbidity and mortality. The clinical outcomes of ESRD patients may differ according to their beliefs concerning their illness and its treatment.

The level of depression was more strongly related to perception of illness than to physical illness variables. However, there was a significant correlation between IEQ and severity of medical illness. There were no differences in IEQ, BDI, or CDI scores between groups. Using BDI and IEQ, PD patients compared with HD patients were younger, experienced a shorter duration of dialysis treatment and endured less severe medical illness. Instruments used to measure perception of illness include the Illness Effects Questionnaire (IEQ), the Revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (IPQ-R), the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ), the BDI, and the SF-36. Accordingly, personal illness beliefs are novel yet potentially modifiable prognostic factors. Illness perceptions have been shown to predict a range of psychosocial and clinical outcomes in ESRD patients, including depression, nonadherence, and even survival. Illness perceptions refer to organized beliefs surrounding the symptoms, consequences, time course, controllability, and causes of an illness.
